Fira to Oia Hike in Santorini – The Most Scenic Route

The famous Santorini hike from Fira to Oia is in my opinion the best activity to do in Santorini, revealing this beautiful Greek island at its most stunning.

Greece Travel Guides - Everything you need to plan your trip to Greece

While hiking Fira to Oia, you'll enjoy beautiful caldera views and pass through picturesque villages. The hiking trail is well marked and suitable for anyone of average fitness.

If you're staying in Santorini for a couple of days, the iconic Santorini hike between Fira and Oia might just be the thing you remember most from your vacation!

Walk From Fira to Oia in Santorini

I've been fortunate to have taken the Fira to Oia hiking route a few times now, the most recent being in March 2023. That's why I'm wearing a jacket in the picture below – you almost definitely won't need a jacket if taking the walk from Fira to Oia in the summer, but more about this later!

Dave Briggs on the Fira to Oia hike in Santorini

There are several reasons I think the Fira to Oia hike is one of the best things to do in Santorini, and why I make time to do it when in Santorini.

The incredible views go without saying of course, as well as the endless photo opportunities.

Perhaps the main reason though, is that the Fira – Oia walk gets you away from the crowds so that you can appreciate just why Santorini became so popular in the first place.

A sign post on the Fira to Oia hiking route in Santorini

Whilst you can do the hike along this scenic route on a paid tour accompanied by a guide, it is very easy to follow by yourself. Here's everything you need to know, along with photos from different stages of the Fira to Oia walk.

Hike From Fira to Oia – The Basics

Technical difficulty: Beginner/ Mobility level: Medium / Fitness level: Moderate

This walk is suitable for light to moderately active people with no mobility issues.

Here's a few tips on the hike from Fira to Oia in Santorini to get you started.

  • Allow 3-4 hour for the walk from Fira to Oia.
  • The walk is around 10kms long (6 miles)
  • The walk is not technical in nature – just follow the signs!
  • You might deviate from the path, but you'd have to try very hard to get actually lost!
  • Make sure you have hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water!
  • The hike from Fira to Oia isn't suitable for strollers/pushchairs.
  • Kids aged 7 and older shouldn't have any problems with the walk.
  • It doesn't matter if you hike Fira to Oia or Oia to Fira in terms of total ascent gained.

Fira to Oia Distance

The distance from Fira to Oia is about 10 kms, and there is a well marked hiking trail to follow. The official starting point for the trail is near the Atlantis Hotel in Fira, and the walk ends in Oia.

Passing through the more important villages of Santorini, hiking from Fira to Oia offers amazing views out onto the volcano and the awe-inspiring coastline.

You want to make sure you have plenty of battery in your phone and cameras. You are going to be taking a LOT of photos along the way during the caldera hike!

Also keep in mind that while the hike ends in Oia, you'll probably want to spend more time wandering around Oia taking photos. If you have timed the walk to end at sunset, you'll also want to make your way to Oia castle.

This means that the 10km walk can quite easily turn into a 14 km walk by the time you've finished!

Santorini Fira to Oia Walk Map

Here's a map of the Fira to Oia hike. You should be able to zoom in and out to get a better idea of the walking trail and the places along the caldera in Santorini you will pass through.

If you don't want to do the entire route, you'll see on the map there are a couple of logical stopping points where you can decide to get a bus back to Fira or on to Oia.

The first is at Imerovigli. Here, you might want to take photos of the Skaros rock and explore the village. There's a bus stop at Imerovigli where you can then travel onwards.

The second logical stopping point is a little further north where there are a cluster of exclusive five star hotels such as the Santorini Princess Spa and Nobu Hotel Santorini. Technically, this is still classed as Imerovigli, but in reality it is like its own little village.

If you walk this far, you'll appreciate that these hotels really do have some of the best sunset views in Santorini! Once here, you can cut through to the road where there is a bus stop opposite the Le Ciel Santorini.

Feeling hardcore? Carry on all the way to Oia!

Take Your Time And Enjoy The Views

Although it is possible to walk from Fira to Oia in 3 hours or less, it's not a race! Take your time, enjoy the walk, and soak up the views. Allowing between 4 and 5 hours would be ideal.

No special equipment is needed for this walk in Santorini. Just a comfortable pair of shoes, some snacks, and some water. Remember to wear a hat and sunblock! Guess who burned their head even in March?

Hiking from Fira to Oia

As I previously mentioned, the hiking path from Fira to Oia is well marked. There are a couple of times where you will need to keep your eyes peeled for signs, but most of it is common sense.

It's a coastal hiking path, and the sea should be on your left! Yes, you will see the sea occasionally on your right as it is the other coastline, but you won't get confused, I promise!

A sign for the Fira to Oia hiking trail in Santorini

Hike from Fira to Oia Starting Point

Picking up the path in Fira first of all is perhaps the trickiest part. While the Fira to Oia hiking trail officially starts in the square beside Hotel Atlantis in Fira, many people find it easier to make their way to the cable cars and start the route from there.

Basically, follow the signs to the cable car, and from there, you will start to see the signs for the walking trail.

The Santorini volcano

As you walk, on your left, you'll see the volcano and possibly some cruise ships parked up. By the way, a Santorini volcano trip is another highly recommended activity to take!

Walking through Fira itself takes a little time. There's lots of great views and photo opportunities. You'll pass by the handrail where people leave padlocks with their initials on. I compared my photos from 2023 to ones taken in 2017, and some of the padlocks were the same!

Hiking out of Fira in Santorini where people leave their padlocks on a handrail

Firostefani

Continue walking along, past the strategically placed plants for photo ops!

Soon, you'll be in Firostefani which nowadays seems merged into one with Fira. One wonders if in 20 years, the entire caldera will be one giant settlement – I'll let you know in 2043!

During the summer, there are plenty of places to get a drink or something to eat. If you are hiking from Fira to Oia in Santorini during the off season though, most of these places will be closed.

If for some reason you get lost in Firostefani (I don't think it's possible, but you never know!), head to the main square and looks for signs like this one below.

Firostefani To Imerovigli

Continue onward along an old cobblestone walking path which leads to the Monastery of Saint Nicolas.

Apparently this monastery contains Byzantine icons. Every time I've hiked from Fira to Oia this monastery has been closed, but by all accounts, it is a worthwhile place to visit.

Saint Nikolaos Holy Convent santorini

The hiking path then continues through one of the most picturesque villages of Santorini – Imerovigli.

Imerovigli and Skaros Rock

You have a few choices once you've reached Imerovigli:

  1. Hike through the village to pick up water and snacks.
  2. Continue hiking along the caldera.
  3. Walk out to Skaros rock

Inevitably, you will at least want a photo of Skaros rock. If you do decide to walk there, you should consider that it will add at least another hour on the the total hike time of your Fira to Oia walk.

Skaros rock Santorini

If you have a few more days left in Santorini, you might want to consider coming out to Skaros rock on another day, as it is a great sunset spot.

At this point, if you don't want to do the entire hike from Fira to Oia, you could get a bus either back to Fira or on to Oia.

Cluster of Luxury Hotels Santorini just outside Imerovigli

If you've decided to carry on walking along the caldera path, you'll start to see Oia way out in the distance at the end of the crescent shaped part of the island.

Oia in the distance as seen when walking from Fira to Oia in Santorini

It will take an hour or two before you get there though, and first, you'll pass by a cluster of luxury hotels.

These hotels really have been built with some of the best sunset views of Santorini in mind. Situated between Imerovigli and the Church of Prophet Elias, if you can afford to stay here, do it! Last chance to take a bus if you want to skip the next part of the hike!

The path then carries on uphill to the Church of Prophet Elias.

Church of Prophet Elias santorini

You'll get some nice views from the church, and if you're lucky, the two outside toilets will be unlocked so you can use them. (Don't expect much beyond a hole in the ground).

Church of Prophet Elias santorini loos

Once you've caught your breath (from the walk, not the loos), you can head down the track and on to Oia.

Santorini Caldera Trail

As you start to walk downhill, it enters a wilder section of walking over the Santorini caldera. The path is paved with rough cobbles in some places, and loose gravel in others.

The path for the Fira to Oia hike

After 10 minutes or so the hike becomes less interesting when you have to walk down to, and then along the road. There is a snack bar open on the road in the summer but in the off season it won't be. Just past the snack bar, you then enter the path once more.

Take a pause at the top of the hill with the The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Holy Chapel. From here you get a proper glimpse of Oia, and then the goal seems much closer!

Every step now takes you closer to Oia!

The walk into Oia from Fira

Eventually, the hiking path ends up in Oia. This is perhaps the most photographed village in Santorini. Lots of blue-domed churches and pretty houses!

Oia is filled with beautiful sights. Be sure to explore the alleyways and wander down different steps and stairs to see where they lead to!

Stunning Photos of Santorini Fira to Oia Walk

It really is beautiful. In fact, you would have to work pretty hard to take a bad photograph here! It is also the place to watch a stunning sunset. A perfect end to the day, but the evening has just begun!

Stay for a few hours in a bar in Oia, or catch the bus back to Fira and prepare for a night out. The choice is yours!

Best Time To Hike From Fira To Oia

One final note. It is best to avoid hiking from Fira to Oia during the hottest parts of the day, especially in the summer. Either set off early morning, or late afternoon.

My advice is to set off in the afternoon, and arrive in Oia in time to watch the sunset. You can then catch a bus back to Fira after, or stay in town for a few hours, and get a taxi back.

Your articles are superb. Nothing else required for trip to Greece if someone can reads your writing.
I have one small thing to get clarity on which is, would you recommend the fira to oia hike with kid in pram ?

My wife and I walked from Fira to Oia today using your advice. Thank you so much for posting this as it was a brilliant walk! We love trekking and are planning next year to walk from Lands End to John O’Groats for charity. So this was a very nice hors d’oeuvres! Best regards John

  3. Is it possible to do the walk in reverse, from Oia to Fira? It seems your recommendations are always to start from Fira — are the views better walking in that direction?

    thank you!

    • Hi Allan,

I just two days ago made the walk between Fira and Oia again!
So, there’s is absolutely no downside to walking in the direction of Oia to Fira – in many respects it’s better as Fira has more and affordable places to eat, and is the transport hub to get back to other places on the island.
The only reason I recommend the Fira to Oia direction, is because so many people plan to see the sunset in Oia. Personally, I find the sunset in Fira to be just as good (well, it is the same sun!), and much less crowded.

  4. I know you mentioned earlier you don’t have much experience with the cruise ships but if we get off the ship and take the cable car to Fira … and plan to walk to Oia… what is your recommendation for getting back to Fira? Is there a place to stop for lunch and call a taxi?

    Reply
    • You can always get a taxi from Oia back to Fira or a bus if the bus timetables line up with your schedule.
Pre-booking a taxi might make sense especially if you are traveling at a busy time of year. You can do that with: Welcome Pickups

  5. Hi Dave, I am going to Santorini on November 23-24 for my honeymoon. We are planning to use your 2-day itinerary for Santorini (hike on 23rd and Akrotiri/Red Beach/Volcano on the 24th).
Would you recommend spending the day in Fira or Oia?
We plan to end up in Oia for sunset, but which town is nicer to stay and explore for several hours? Will anything be open? Thanks in advance!

    • Congratulations for your marriage!
Interesting question – I looked back in my Google photos history and I have way more photos of Oia (even excluding sunset) than Fira.
Based on that, I’d say Oia!
As for anything being open – tricky one as they vary from year to year. There’s always more places open (for food) in Fira than in Oia at that time of year.
Depending on where your hotel is and your schedule, I’d suggest spending time in Oia for photos and exploring the alleyways, but perhaps have a meal in Fira first.

  6. Hi,
I am travelling solo in a budget island hoping early May. Will flight into Santorini and stay 2 nights before jumping the ferry to Naxos. I see recommendations to stay in Fira or Oia, is this in general or for the hike? also for the 2 days what do you recommend. Love hiking, swimming and discovering new little villages. Thanks in advance for your help

    • Hi – In general I’d say Fira is more convenient as a location. In terms of budget, you might find cheaper accommodation in Kamari, but you’re the wrong side of the island then and would need to get buses all the time.

I just did this hike two days go on my trip to Santorini. Once we passed Imerovigli there weren’t many pictures to take until we arrived in Oia. That stretch between the two was really long and on tough terrain. If I had to do it again, I was walk from Fira to Imerovigli and then catch a taxi from Imerovigli to Oia.

    • Hi,
Yes Santorini is incredibly safe. The path is well marked, and at that time the weather will be about ideal.
You can expect places to be open at that time as well.

I’ve also heard the same stories, but never arrived by cruise ship, so am unsure as to how bad they really are.
I’ve heard that some people have good experiences using the water taxis to skip these lines. I’ve no direct info myself, but there seems to be some Tripadvisor tips you could look into.

I am thinking of 2 nights in Athens, we will fly there, and then taking a ferry to another island. Not sure which one yet- looking for recommendations. My daughter will be 14 so not interested in Mykonos. Which other island would you recommend and also is everything open at the end of April or will a lot of places still be closed for winter still?

If you are happy to drive on the islands, then Tinos is my new favourite place. Lots of lovely villages, nice beaches (if you get lucky with warm weather which is very possible), and great food. I’ve a guide to Tinos here: Tinos Travel Guide.
I’m not sure how set in stone you itinerary is, but if internal flights aren’t booked, rather than coming back to Athens and then going out to another island, you could simply get a ferry to another island. Just a thought.
I’d also recommend ending your trip with time in Athens if possible, so if there are any problems with ferries it wouldn’t affect your flight home.
Have a great time in Greece!

Might I suggest just trying the section between Fira and Imerovigli to begin with. If you feel strong after, you can just carry on.

    • Hi,
I don’t think there is anything so close to an edge that would cause concern. There’s always sections you can hop in and out of should things become an issue. For the most part though, it is just a pleasant walk with great views!

      • Hi Dave, the link you have provided for the walking tour states that the tour starts at 4pm. Do you think that is an ideal time to start the tour, or should we choose one that starts a bit earlier to make it in time to Oia for the sunset ?

The tours ‘should’ be set up to arrive for sunset, but I’d suggest checking with them before booking to make sure.
Also keep in mind that sunset right now is around 20.00. In a few months time, it will be an hour or two earlier.

Thanks for the great tips! We’ll be visiting and hiking Fira – Oia mid September. Like your suggestion of leaving late afternoon and arriving about an hour before sunset. We’d then love to find a great restaurant to have dinner and watch the sunset. Do you have a recommendation?

If we stay for dinner, what are our options for getting back to Fira? Are there buses that run later, or just taxis?
    thanks,

    • Hi Gail,
I’ve got no personal recommendations for restaurants, but what I would say, is make sure to reserve if you want to eat dinner watching the sunset.
Buses should still be running at that time of year – but it does depend what time you decide to leave.
You’ll always be able to get a taxi though.

You can do the hike on your own, but you would need to think about your transport at either end.
Weather – warm but not very hot. However, at that time of year you might get occasional rain – it’s the time when the seasons change so it’s unpredictable.

I think the idea of a long lunch is a good one, but you may end up walking at a hot part of the day at some point. If you are ok with a later lunch, leaving at 13.00 would time everything right for the rest of the day – but it will be warm so take lots of water!

Is it possible to split the hike in 3 parts, in 3 days? For example Imerogvili – Fira (return by bus) , next day – Imerogvili – Finikia (return by bus) and Finikia – Oia on the 3rd day? My question is : are the bus stops easily accessible from the foothpath ? Is there any section I can skip ( not so spectacular). May be Imerogvili – Finikia? I have an elderly person with me , hence I wonder if we can do it in parts. Thank you in advance

    Reply
    • Hi Yana,
You could split it into three parts if you were determined to do it.
May I suggest instead just taking the Fira – Imerogvili section. It’s quite beautiful and your start and stop points are easy, espcially for the bus.
On another day, you could get a bus in, to drop you on the outskirts of Oia if you prefer.
Key point – Avoid the peak heat of the day!

I’ll be in Santorini from Sept. 10 to Sept. 13 and planning to do the hike solo. I saw your previous comments and it doesn’t sound like I’ve got anything to worry about if I go it alone :-). I wanted to get a sense of temperatures in mid-September – are we still talking 30s? Also, is getting a taxi (or bus) back to Fira relatively easy in the evening? I’d hate to trek all the way there and miss the sunset because I was worried about having to sleep on a beach due to lack of transportation 😉

    Thanks so much,

    • Hi Ann,
It’s always difficult to tell with September, but 30s is a possibility at the peak of the day.
If you are timing your walk to arrive an hour or so before sunset you’ll definitely find it more pleasant!
There’ll always be taxi availability – you just may need to wait for one is all.
You could also ask your hotel for a bus timetable, and a local taxi number if they have one.
      Have a great trip!

My plan was to get to Oia by early afternoon have a long lunch, explore Amoudi Bay and Oia until our reservation. I appreciate your advice.

I think you could start at 09.00 to avoid most of the heat. 10.00 would be the latest, although in June you might have some nice breezes to cool you along the way.
Having a long lunch / chilling out with a coffee for an hour or two is definitely the way to go during the afternoon!

  23. Hi there! Thanks for the article. I am currently in Santorini and wondering about hiking this trail (Fira to Oia). How is this hike for “beginners” (challenge-wise)? I really want to do the hike, but I will also be with my grandmother. We are both in good shape for our ages, and today she walked all 588 stairs UP from Old Port with almost no difficulty. So, I am wondering your opinion on if this hike would be OK for us to complete. Thanks!

    • Hi Hannah,
If she walked the stairs, she can definitely do this walk.
In fact, by the sound of it, you’ll have trouble keeping up!
In all seriousness, this is a nice gentle walk. Not technical. And there’s no place more beautiful to take five minutes out and rest the legs than with a Santorini view!
      Enjoy the hike 🙂

  24. I will be on a very tight schedule during my brief time on Santorini. I will only have about half an hour to enjoy a short hike along the caldera footpath. Which section of the hike do you feel is the most scenic and “doable” in 30 minutes? Where should I be dropped off and picked up? I would most enjoy spectacular caldera views and iconic Cycladic architecture. Thanks in advance for your input!

    • Hi Jamie,
I would question if it would be worth it for just half an hour.
However, you could try the first section from Fira to Imerovigli.
You might be better simply spending more time in Oia instead though. Perhaps getting dropped off somewhere near the sunset point, and then walking back to the end of the town – that way you’ll see a few streets and views.
Have a great time in Santorini!

  25. Thank you for this article!

I am physically fit but sometimes I have sudden bouts of pounding heart that can -though rarely- end up in me fainting. So I was trying to figure out if there is an immediate way-out out of this trail, a way to ask for immediate help (from official civil officers, emergency, etc.. rather than depending on passers-by)? is there a simple way to go back quickly to my hotel when this condition of mine hits? I am afraid it is a challenge to seek immediate help given the nature of the villages which might limit accessibility.

thank you for the input in advance!

    • Hi Rania,
I think it’s prudent to put safety first in this case, and skip the walk. The additional heat might also affect your condition.
Instead, it will give you more time to spend in both Oia and Fira, and you could take a taxi between the two.
Have a great trip to Santorini!

  26. Hello! My husband and are will be in Santorini the first week of June with our adult son and daughter, ages 22 and 26. I think this hike would be perfect for us. We are staying in Oia, so I suppose we’d start there. Where do we find the start of the hike? How much would it cost to take a cab back from Fira? And how long is the trip from Fira to Oia by bus? Thanks very much!

    • Hi Linda,
In answering this (and another comment), I think it would be best for you to either get a cab or a bus down to Fira, and then walk back to Oia for the sunset from there.
The journey time could be less than 20 minutes – depends on time of day.
Cab would be quickest, but bus might be more fun.

  27. Thank you so much for all this information. Just one question – do the buses run on regular schedule from Oia to Fira? If we plan to take bus back, just want to make sure we have plenty of time to catch our cruise ship.

    • Hi Kathy,
Yes the buses run on a regular schedule but (there’s always a but in Greece haha)…
Sometimes it depends on traffic on the island as to exactly how on time they are.
The peak months July/August can see some heavy traffic on the roads which quite frankly aren’t really designed for it, as it’s a small island.
As long as you don’t leave it til the last minute to meet your ship you’ll be fine.
Additional – When you dock, you will most likely be given instructions on what time to be back and how to do it. Whether your fellow passengers decide to walk or not, almost all of them will be there for sunset along with you. You’re literally all in the same boat 😀

  28. Hi there, would you recommend doing this walk in the early morning as a solo female traveller (without a tour group)? I am wanting to do this hike when I visit in late July 2019.

    • Hi Kristyn,
In July I would recommend either starting early (as you suggest) or later afternoon in order to avoid the peak heat of the day.
It’s a lovely walk, which you can definitely feel comfortable walking by yourself.

  29. Hi, we will be staying in Fira 17th to 20th November and plan to do this walk. Can you tell me will there be restaurants or cafes open at that time of the year? also would there be many restrooms along the way?

    Reply
    • Hi Annette,
I hope you are well and enjoyed the weekend!
You will be walking at the same time of year that we did – I hope you have the same great weather!
Unfortunately, there won’t be many (if any) restaurants or cafes open along the way at that time of year after you leave Fira.
You may (emphasis on may) find that a couple of hotels open at that time of year along the way – They’ll always be ok with you using the restroom.
My advice – be prepared for not much in facilities at that time of year, and take advantage of any you come across along the way!!
      Enjoy your time in Greece.

  30. Hi we are visiting Santorini on July 2nd from noon to 10 pm on a cruise. I know it will be hot and we will bring water. But wondering how tough would it be to get a taxi in Oia after the walk at about 6 pm?

  31. Thank you for your post. I did the hike yesterday from Fira to Oia. Thank god it was only 20* out, It took me 5 hrs, , stopped and climbed Skaros Rock, but only made it up 3/4 of the way.. when you got around to the right side, found it too challenging to complete as I was my myself and needed either a hand up or a push on my butt up to some of those higher rocks!! I’m not in good shape physically . So I did find the climb back up from Skaros rock a bit challenging, but I took my time , took LOTS of breaks and made it . As for the hike , was so worth it. It probably took me longer than the average person, as I stopped often to take pictures and rest my dam calves. Took the bus back to Fira for 1.80€.
Relaxing by the pool today, walking a little funny! Lol
    Thanks agian for your tips,

  32. Hi,

Going to Santorini in Sep 20, If we start in the morning from Red beach, winery and start walking in the afternoon from Fira to Oia? Is it possible to do? Thanks,

    Reply
    • Hi Jin – Yes it sounds possible but it would be a very full day!
It may be best to organise the winery tour in advance so you know the times you have available to create the rest of your itinerary.

  33. Hi,
Going to Santorini for my third time. This time with my family. We will be there first week in october. Is it still tourist season then with “everything” open?
We are planning to do this hike, it seems like a wonderful hike. So a hope we manage to follow the road by signs…

    • Hi Lotta,
You will find ‘most’ places open, but perhaps not everything. (as in every single restaurant).
However, the tourist season is changing rapidly in Santorini year on year – The days of Santorini closing up early like the rest of the Greek islands are long behind.
Personally, I think you are visiting at a fantastic time 🙂
      enjoy the hike

  34. Hi,
We will be stopping in Santorini in September on a cruise ship for 11 hours, we also plan to walk up the steps then take the bus from Fira to Oia, visit Oia a while and hike back to Fira, what do you think? Is it better to walk from Fira to Oia or our plan is okay? I just want to beat the cruise ship crowd. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

    • Hi Michele,

I guess it depends on when your ship leaves.
Most people walk in the direction I’ve mentioned to catch the sunset at the end, but if you are due to sail by then anyway then your plan works fine!

  35. I’ll be visiting Santorini next month as part of a Mediterranean cruise. We’re doing a boat ride out to Nea Kameni in the morning (finishing up around noon), and I’m wondering if there’s a way to do this hike and be back in time for our departure at 7:00 p.m. I’d really love to see Oia – can I make that happen in 6-7 hours? Thanks!

    • Hi Julia,

Sounds like you have time as you describe it. 6 hours is enough to do the walk in my opinion, although the heat affects people in different ways. Best option is to ask the people taking you out to Nea Kameni and see what they think!

  36. Hello. We will be staying in On a the first week of June. We are definitely going to try the hike. Are there any little boutique store along the way? Places that are not too touristy? Thanks. We are so excited for this trip 🙂

    • Hi Robin,

I hope you enjoy your time in Santorini!
There are some boutique stores along the way, although you will need to divert from the path at places when you get to a village (it will be obvious where you can. Just come to a cluster of houses and look around!).
Places that are not too touristy – Well, in all honesty Santorini is a bit of a victim of its own success. That doesn’t detract from the beautiful sights and villages you will see along the way though.

    • Sand Lily in Imerovigli is a beautiful little boutique store with very unique accessories and jewellery. Worth a visit.
It is on the lower path, just above and a little further from Skaros Rock, when walking from Firostefani toward Oia.

  37. Which portion of the hike is the most scenic? I will be staying in Imerovigli. Would you say that the Fira to Imerovigli is better or Imerovigli to Oia? I am sure the whole route is scenic and beautiful but which portion must not be missed? (In case we don’t have the time or energy to hike the entire trail…) Thanks!

    • Hi,
It’s really hard to narrow down what exactly would be the ‘best bits’. Sometimes, a walk is rewarding in itself! If you only have time to do one section though, Imerovigli to Oia makes the most sense to walk, especially if you time it with arriving to see the sunset a little later on. Enjoy your time in Santorini!

  38. We are actually staying in Oia during our trip the last weekend of September. We would like to do the hike for sure! What would you recommend, bus to Fira and hike back that afternoon/evening? or Hike Oia to Fira in the am?
Also, our two full days are Sunday and Monday- any advice on which day might be better to explore Oia- the other day we plan to go south (Perissa and Akrotiri).

    Thank you!

    • The last weekend of September should be a great time to visit. It will be cooler and with less visitors 🙂
I think as you are staying in Oia, taking the bus to Fira and starting from there, and heading back to the sunset makes the most sense.
In terms of when things may be open – I don’t think it will make much difference. Akrotiri should be open every day, although it does close Monday’s during the winter (last year this was classed as November – March).
I hope you have a great time!

  39. Thanks to this post we did the walk last week. Not an easy trail to walk be the views and people we met along the way were well worth it. Leave early and try lunch in Amoudi Bay, take the city bus back to Fora for only 1.6 euros.

    • I think at different times of year because of the temperature it can be more challenging. Glad you completed it though, met some friendly folks, and also used the public transport system to get back. I hope it gave you a nice experience in Santorini 🙂
