We're nearly in the throes of the Summer sun and you know what that means. It's time to start planning that getaway vacation. With so many options to choose from, it's important to set your priorities straight to make sure you get the most from your time off. How about London?
Your first thought may be to hit some tropical paradise and lay out on the beach—and that's not a bad idea, but it may be a little misguided. That trip to the Bahamas is perfect for escaping the icy grip of Winter, but it's easy to forget just how balmy these places get in the Summer. Not to mention packed with tourists (like yourself). Why not hit the United Kingdom instead? A ton of Brits will be leaving the country for their own vacations, so it's a perfect time for you to check out the British Isles for yourself during a time of the year where the weather is actually nice.
Vacationers looking to catch a flight to Heathrow are in luck during the Summer months with low rates for the savvy adventurer and a much lower chance of weather delays. Yeah, we're bummed too that you can't bring back the Concorde when you go international but at least with British Airways you can jetset in style without taking out a second mortgage. That leaves more cash for the good stuff.
And goodness gracious is there a ton of good stuff to do. In addition to the perfectly temperate Summer climate, London offers absolutely no shortage of attractions whether you're into music, food, sports, or the countryside.
It goes without saying but for the gourmand traveling to London, you're about to land smack in the middle of haute cuisine heaven. The sheer selection can be daunting and you'd be hard pressed to make a wrong choice. But for us, the money has to be on Restaurant Gordon Ramsay on Royal Hospital Road. The name may bring to mind that well-coiffed angry gentlemen with the mouth of a sailor from Hell's Kitchen. But don't let the media fool you, Ramsay knows his stuff. This one has three Michelin stars and is easily among the best restaurants in the world. If you're only in London once, make sure you save up and be sure to get a reservation, it's an experience you won't regret. Treat yo'self.
Now that you've gorged yourself on truffles and foie gras, you may need to find a way to burn off those extra calories. For the active traveller looking to stay in shape while taking in the sights, there are plenty of great cycling attractions to appease even the more die-hard gear-head. Cyclists looking to go the distance may want to leave London, and take a coast to coast excursion across the country. The UK is an exceptionally bike-friendly place and offers excellent organised bike tours like the Deloitte Ride Across Britain. You can also opt for any number of shorter rides that still allow for riders to get the most from the lush country and coasts.
So, you've eaten the best and seen the lay of the land, but you'd really like to get in a great party. And why shouldn't you? You're on vacation so go mental (but not too mental). For those looking to get their groove on, you can always hit up the legendary Fabric nightclub and boogie down to any number of the best DJs in the world for a club experience that is often imitated but never recreated anywhere else. For those looking for something that's more of an event, you can't miss the annual Field Day festival in Victoria Park. England's most refined festival always brings in top-notch acts and this year is no exception. Experimental indie-dance mavens Caribou and legendary Brit-pop shoegazers Ride head up a finely curated and eclectic bill of some of the hottest acts in the world.
If you're not convinced yet then frankly, I don't know how to help you. But don't sleep on making plans, because concert tickets will sell out, restaurants will book up, and we all know that the earlier you book your flight to London the better your deal. Oh, so you've decided you're going to go? That's terrific! Have a great time and don't forget to go home.
