Museum of Greek Gastronomy in Athens

The food in Greece is one of the best things about visiting the country on vacation! So, with a gastronomy museum in Athens, it seemed like a great place to see.

I should start this article about the Museum of Greek Gastronomy in Athens with an apology though.

I have made it my mission to visit every museum in Athens, and experience first hand what each one has to offer. With this museum though, I ran into a bit of a problem.

When I arrived at the museum, it was closed. I also couldn't see any sign on the door indicating opening hours.

The website here – https://www.gastronomymuseum.gr/ doesn't give any clue as to the opening hours either. (It wasn't working as of 2020). The phone number – +30 211 3211311 just rang and didn't get answered. Bugger.

How to visit the Gastronomy museum in Athens

Perhaps it has new winter opening hours? Maybe there was an emergency and they closed the building for just a day? I am not sure.

It certainly looks like the Museum of Greek Gastronomy is still operating, as the museum shop had plenty of stock. I just couldn't find out any information.

Unfortunately, I have a tight schedule for a couple of weeks, and so I had to write about it anyway. Instead of writing about my experiences at the Museum of Greek Gastronomy in Athens however, all I can do is present you with information I found elsewhere online.

About the Greek Gastronomy museum

The Museum of Greek Gastronomy in Athens is located in a neoclassical building at 13, Agiou Dimitriou Street 10554 Psiri , Athens.

The museum contains some permanent exhibitions explaining the processing involved behind popular products such as olive oil. It also has temporary displays running for a few months at a time.

There is a museum shop on the ground floor, and a courtyard cafe. The cafe serves coffee and snacks during the day, and a selection of meals in the evening. The entire concept of the Museum of Greek Gastronomy in Athens, is to educate people about Greek cuisine.

And that my friends, is about all I can tell you.

I am a little sad not to have experienced the Museum of Greek Gastronomy in Athens first hand. Mission failed!

I guess I could have planned it better, but I really expected the place to be open when I visited on a Friday afternoon. If anyone from the Museum of Greek Gastronomy in Athens happens to be reading this, please get in touch, as I would love to visit! Also if you are walking around the historic center of Athens and happen to see it open, let me know!
