Stay out of fastfood establishments unless you're using their wifi to bring down governments! lmao

(and procure new socks, preferably ethnical organic fairtrade cotton ones)!

Hi dan,
I unfortuantely was only given a short visa for columbia, and had to rush my way through, so i am not sure that i am the greatest person to ask.
certainly, Columbia is a very safe country, with friendly people, and they are cycling nuts! You´ll get talking to tonnes of people interested in your trip... The people seem to have a more European outlook, and are more forthcoming than in Ecuador. Places to stay are cheap and good quality.
If you have time, consider tacking on a trip to the San Blas islands at the end of your trip... truly beautiful.
Sorry i couldnt be of more help in regards to routes and cycling, but i had to make a straight line through the country, and crossed with 1 day left on my visa.
enjoy your trip!!
Dave

Hi Ross,
Thanks for visiting, and hope the site is either of some help or amusement... perfect if it is both!
Things will get cheaper as you head south. In the states, if you make good use of the state campgrounds and www.warmshowers.org , you will save a good wedge of money. The initial part of the trip is always more expensive.
In regards to Mexico - There is trouble between the drug cartels and the government forces, with many deaths on both sides. HOWEVER, i have yet to hear of a tourist getting caught up in this, and i certainly had no problems in Mexico whatsoever. Not sure which route you would take - Tijuana and into baja, i would suggest booking a half decent hotel in Tijuana for the first night to make life easy. If doing the Copper Canyon, consider teaming up with some others to have safety when wild camping.
Enjoy your trip buddy !!
Dave

Hi Dave,
Great site and continue to follow your progress whenever I get the chance. Im currently doing a silmilar trip (around the vancouver area just now) but am wondering about the safety of travelling through mexico at the moment. Everyone I talk to says its ultra dangerous at the minute and im not sure whether this is true or a little bit excaggerated. how did you find it? im half thinking of getting a cruise around it - do you think id be missing out doing it this way? also, so far ive been overspending big time - everythings so expensive up here. does it get a lot cheaper the further south i go? thanks a lot and good luck for the rest of your trip, ross

Hey Dave,

I stumbled across your website doing research for my own trip. In January a buddy and I are doing Machala, Ecuador to Santa Marta, Colombia, and would love to pick your brain especially on Colombia. We biked Mendoza to Lima a couple of years ago, so if you want any heads up as it looks like you're coming up on Bolivia, don't hesitate. Get ready for a lot of altitude!

Any ideas on routes, places to visit/avoid, roads that were especially nice/awful etc, I'd love to hear your take on Colombia. And Ecuador for that matter, although I know Ecuador pretty well. Thanks man, and good journey.

Cheers,

Dan

-"And when I turned the corner, I came across simply the most amazing view" - THE CAT ON THE SOFA! lmao

The journey from the bedroom, up the hall and through the kitchen was awe inspiring, made me glad i'd gone to so much effort finding my slippers!

(good to see you happy) x
