Daves Travel Pages - A travelogue site

My name's Dave Briggs, and thanks for taking the time to visit my travelogue website. Over the last ten years, I've been fortunate to have backpacked around the world several times, and instead of keeping my diaries on a shelf gathering dust, they're here for all to see.
This is quite a large site, but hopefully, I've made it fairly easy to navigate around. You can click on the Previous Trips link to see the where and when of trips I've made, or alternatively, click on a country name to read about my travels in that place. A few of my trips still need typing up, but they will make it on here... Eventually!
The next trip that I make, will be to cycle from England to South Africa, starting in 2006. During the run up to my departure, I'll keep updating my plans and preparations, and then when I'm out on the road, I'll try to update the travelogue once a week.

                     Current Trip - Africa 2006/2007

Northampton to Cape Town    -  By bike (no, not a motor bike!)

The plan is quite simple... Ride a bicycle from Northampton, England to Cape Town, South Africa. I leave on July 23rd 2006 at 6.15 am, (that's precision planning for you!)

23/06/06 - A month to go!! I've had my first two doses of the rabies vaccination, and have two more to go. I've handed my notice in to the landlord, and let work know. As I type this, I'm looking at my bike, wishing I could leave on my trip now! Help spread the word about this website, and make me your homepage!

03/05/06 - The India Travelogue is now finished and online, spread out over 9 pages. For an overview of my thoughts after my India experience try this.

25/04/06 - New ... Sign up for my Newsletter and receive regular updates whilst I'm on the road!

09/04/06 - A departure date of 23rd July 2006 looks more or less certain now. I was also pleasantly suprised to find that my website now has a Google rank of four. Hopefully, this will mean more visitors, and more people clicking on the various adverts around the site. Who knows, hopefully I will get to the stage where I can earn an income big enough to travel fulltime !! Find out about Google Ranking.

25/03/06 - All the visa planning is now done. It's just a matter of saving cash now, ready for an end of July departure. The cycling to work and back is going really well, and it makes such a change to be cycling in daylight now!

27/02/06 - A rough route has been worked out all the way to Istanbul. I'm just working on my visa planning, available from the link above. Have in mind a departure date of July 21st. (Don't know why, just sounds good to me!)

31/01/06 - Can't believe its the end of January already!! The money situation is going ok, but probably looking at an August departure. Route planning is going well, and general training of cycling to work is fine. Have been away a couple of times this month to Berlin, and to Bath and Avebury.

26/12/05 - Christmas out of the way, and Santa bought me a couple of things for the bike, which was nice! Lots of pedalling needed to burn off a frenzy of chocolate! The first draft of a route is here.

11/12/05 - Have bought a selection of general country maps to improve my knowledge of the geography of the areas I'll be travelling though. Got some waterproof cycling gear. Hoping Santa will bring me some goodies I can use on the trip!

06/12/05 - Have bought a bike, which is a Dawes Super Galaxy touring bike. Riding it to work occasionally, but early start times and late finishes mean most of it's in the dark! Have planned a rough route, which would be the Eastern Africa one. Basically cycle from the UK, through France, Germany, follow the River Danube, through some of eastern Europe to Turkey. From there through the Middle East to Egypt, then through the Sudan, Ethiopia, and down the east coast of Africa before reaching Cape Town. Sounds pretty simple!! Estimated time of Departure - 01/06/06.

If there is a theme to my life and this travelogue, it's... Travel, learning and experience. Life's too short to stay in one place, so pack your bag, and get out there on the road!
