A Review of 2012

Cycling from Nordkapp to Cape Town - The Long Way - 2013

A Review of 2012

It might have been the year of the London Olympics, a British Tour de France win and much more besides, but its time for a little review of 2012 from my own perspective.

For me, 2012 was a year of keeping my head down, and working hard. My ultimate goal is to build up a substantial kitty before my next cycling expedition (which I hope will turn into a form of perpetual travel – something that I will write about during the next week). In this regard, it was all very successful – I worked at maximising my income and reducing my expenditure, but still managed to buy myself a few treats throughout the year. I was quite focused for much of the time, apart from around July and August which was due to a combination of a relationship and my sailing trip from Malta to Sicily. Neither of these went to plan, and so in October I was back on track once more!

One of the things that I was keen to pursue and develop, was finding ways to earn a living online. Again, I had a very successful year and had a nice little income through my websites and freelance writing. In fact, having analysed the figures, it seems that in 2012 I earned enough this way to have potentially just about supported one year on the road cycling. This is obviously great news, and got me thinking that if I could do this, with say two months put aside to work heavily online, I might even be able to travel and save money at the same time – Now that WOULD be nice!

One of the things that I rarely do when in the UK and saving for a cycling expedition, is to take a holiday abroad, however, in 2012 I did just that. It came in the form of a sailing trip that was originally going to be between Malta and Tunisia, but ended up being from Malta to Sicily. This trip did not go entirely as planned, as there were a lot of tensions between the two other people on it. I wouldn’t say this was entirely successful for me, but it was an experience!

One of the other great things that happened throughout the year, was that there were a lot of social events through work, including a box at the Saints rugby ground. A lot of these were paid for – Its always nice to get drunk and have a good time for free! In addition to this, we had two bigger works trips away, one to Blackpool in the summer and one to Birmingham for Christmas – Again, great fun and mostly paid for!

The one area that didn't go very well during 2012 was my training. I could put some of the blame for this on the extra hours I was putting in working online, which is true to a certain extent. For the most part though, I was a little lazy, and the weather in 2012 was quite simply crap.

So – What does 2013 hold? Much of the same I think. It will be another year of working and saving hard, and another year of exploring and developing streams of online revenue. Although I haven’t go a holiday planned this year, I am toying with the idea of cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats. Most importantly though, I need to get my head into training again, and get out on the road. Wishing you all a fun filled 2013 ahead!

Travel Quotes
“Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.”
