When I first heard about a bloggers conference happening in October, my first reaction was why should I go to TBEX in Dublin in 2013? I mean, its going to cost me money and what am I going to get out of it? After a bit of thought and some online research though, I came to the conclusion that it would be a good idea to go to Dublin in October for TBEX for the following reasons –
To learn – I have been running Daves Travel Pages for over 8 years, and in fact, that makes it one of the oldest travel blogs on the internet. During that time, I have learnt a lot of things, but I would be a liar to say I know it all. It is important to be open to new ideas, and in fact, a conversation I had with a blogger today really emphasized the point. I won't name names, but he was convinced that the way he was promoting his blog and acquiring an audience was the one and only way. I'm not going to say that he was wrong when it came to his own blog, and if he felt it was working, then fine. What I would say though, is that it is always possible to learn from others and approach things from different angles. To completely put a wall up against new thoughts or ideas doesn't make any sense, and so therefore, one of the reasons that I will be visiting TBEX in Dublin 2013 is to learn from others.
To network – One of the reasons that I should go to TBEX in Dublin, is that it will provide a great opportunity to network with people. With hundreds of bloggers attending, it will be possible to finally meet some of those Twitter and Facebook contacts, and there will also be representatives of the travel industry present. If I make the right contacts, I may be able to raise the profile of my travel blog and perhaps end up with some form of sponsorship. At the very least, even if I don't manage too, I can see how other people are doing it!
Inspiration – I have nearly a year and a half to go before I start my next cycling trip around the world, and during that time it is important to keep motivated and inspired. I love hearing other peoples travel tales, and I also like hearing about how people have turned their blogs into a success. With key note speakers, and the chance to meet other travellers, i am sure to be able to find further inspiration to help me both push the blog to the next level, and to open up ideas for my next trip.
Meeting like minded people – My family and friends are great people, and I am fortunate in the fact that not one of them says “You can't do that”. More often than not, they are saying “You've been in England ages now, when are you going away next?” ! I suppose I could take that two ways!! However, as supportive as they are, its always nice to meet people who have been and done similar things to myself. Its good to hear other peoples experiences and maybe pick up a few hints and tips along the way.
These are just some of the reasons that I should go to TBEX in Dublin in 2013, and I am sure once I am there, I will get a lot out of it. As its stands at the moment, my conference ticket is paid for, and I will be looking at flights over the next few days.
