Use a Water Filter
Using a water filter / purifier on a trip is not only a great way to save money, but also helps the environment, and keeps you healthy. On a long trip, buying 3 litres of bottled water a day is not only costly over time, but bad for the environment with the amount of empty plastic bottles discarded. There are many water filters out there, but the one I use is a Katadyn Combi.
Although quite bulky in size, its ceramic filter cleans out both bacteria and viruses, and lasts for literally thousands of litres. Although the novelty of filtering your own water will soon wear thin, the ability to filter water from not only taps, but rivers, streams and even puddles makes you self sufficicent. (I have no association with Katadyn, so this isn't sponsored in any way).
