My 2016 travel plans include visiting a number of countries I have never been before. Albania, Iceland, Macedonia, and Kosovo will all be new to me, and I look forward to seeing and learning more about them. There will also be a few trips out to Greek islands, and perhaps a longer period spent in Asia at the end of the year. What are your 2016 travel plans?
My 2016 Travel Plans
It's probably best to keep in mind one simple phrase before starting to describe my 2016 travel plans. “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”. This is particularly true in my case!
As regular readers may know, I had planned to cycle around the world in 2015. Circumstances changed though, and I moved to Greece instead (as you do).
Did I learn any lessons from this? Have a plan, but be prepared to change it? Embrace an opportunity when you see it? Follow your heart not your head? Maybe. Possibly. Probably not.
Life is about learning, and I am fairly certain that life has got some more lessons in store for me! I like having a plan though. It makes me feel like I have a direction, and a goal to achieve. These then are my 2016 travel plans (as they stand at the moment!).
2016 Travel Plans
This will be interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, I have never visited these Balkan countries before, so I can't wait to see what they are all about. Secondly, a couple of these countries have a bad rep. Albania and Kosovo? Who goes there?
You can expect a typically Dave series of blog posts about what I think to them. Thirdly, Greece and Macedonia have a major diplomatic row over the very name Macedonia.
Greece argues that by using the name, Macedonia (became independent from Yugoslavia in 1991) is stealing some of it's culture. Macedonia argues “What the hell else are we going to call ourselves?”.
OK, the row goes deeper than this, and I HAVE been reading a lot about it. Having lived in Greece for the last nine months, I have only really heard one side of the argument. Time to visit Macedonia and see what they have to say!
“Mount Olympus – Mytikas“
April/May – I would like to visit some of the parts of Northern Greece during this time. Circumstances will dictate whether or not I do this on a bicycle, but I would like to visit both Ioannina and Mount Olympus at some point.
If I CAN do this on a bicycle, then I may try to do some sort of coast to coast ride in Greece, starting from say Igoumenitsa and finishing in Leptokarya. I have put no thought into this whatsoever yet.
The only reason I mention it, is because it might be a good training run for the following trip…
June/July – This is going to be a cycling trip around Iceland! I am very excited about this part of my 2016 travel plans, and will research in earnest in the New Year.
Iceland is one of those countries which I know will be very challenging to cycle around, but hopefully, will be as equally rewarding. The chances are that I won't be able to see the famous Northern Lights when I am there, but I am sure there will be enough volcanoes, waterfalls, and glaciers to compensate!
The general idea, is to spend 6-8 weeks cycling around the Iceland ring road, as well as venturing into the wilder interior area . Don't worry – I will keep you regularly updated on this one! Preparations, gear lists, logistics, routes – You will get it all!
September/October – A Greek island. The great thing about living in Greece, is that there is so much of it to see! I have barely scratched the surface when it comes to visiting Greek islands, and have only really seen Santorini, Lefkada and Crete. I would love to include some time in either Corfu or Rhodes for my 2016 travel plans.
November/December – This really does depend on what else happens during the year, but there is a small chance of spending two or three months in South-East Asia. It is an area of the world I haven't properly seen, although I have fond memories of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Should I spend time relaxing on a beach in Thailand, or enjoying the Philippines? Fingers crossed this will happen!
I know what you are going to ask next. How can you afford all this? Well, first, let me say that I am NOT one of the ‘press-trip brigade' travel bloggers! I plan and finance all my trips myself. I do this in one simple way – I work really hard!
Currently, I am a freelance writer, WordPress blog designer, internet marketer, and social media manager. This means that I can take my work with me, and earn as I travel. I don't want to use the word digital nomad, but, well…
Oh, by the way, if you are interested in using my services for any of the above, don't hesitate to get in touch! You can email me here – firstname.lastname@example.org
