Few other continents on earth offer travellers such diversity and variety as Asia. From fascinating ancient cultures to ultra modern city-scapes, this part of the world offers a unique and exciting blend of old and new.
An Asian Adventure
To organise your own unforgettable Asian adventure, you need to set aside ample time to really explore all that this continent has to offer. With this in mind, here is a look at just some of the must-see attractions and experiences, from China to Hong Kong and Cambodia.
The Great Wall of China
There’s a reason why it’s up there on every travellers to-do list. The Great Wall is as spectacular as all of the guidebooks suggest, snaking over 13,000 miles (the most recent estimate) through China’s undulating countryside.
Construction of the original wall began 2000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty. The best way to visit The Great Wall is on a guided tour. However, take one during the week, rather than at the weekend, to avoid the swarms of visitors.
The Temples of Angkor
For anyone journeying to Cambodia, be sure to make time for the spectacular temples of Angkor. The temples that remain today are the skeleton of what was once the capital of Cambodia's ancient Khmer Empire – which boasted a population of one million.
Showcasing the extravagant architecture and design favoured by the Cambodian god-kings, many temples are now overrun with giant tree roots, but still look just as spectacular.
In a country ravaged by the trauma of war and dictatorship, the temples of Angkor offer tranquillity, beauty and a chance to marvel at mans achievements.
Experience Hong Kong
Asia doesn’t just showcase its past. Cities like Hong Kong are some of the most exciting, fast-paced and futuristic in the world. Hong Kong is a bustling hub of shopping, finance, business and culture –offering something to please every kind of traveller. And when it comes to dining, it offers everything from world-class restaurants to delicious street stalls.
Hong Kong is just one of the many exhilarating cities that Asia has to offer. Other destinations include Tokyo, Beijing and Bangkok.
Explore the natural beauty
Asia is so much more than just the fascinating sights and sounds of its cities. Its natural beauty is as equally breathtaking, ranging from snow-capped mountains to wildlife-rich jungles.
For lovers of amazing natural panoramas, Halong Bay in Vietnam will not disappoint. With some 3000 stunning island landscapes rising up from picturesque emerald waters, it’s quite spectacular.
Personally, we loved the beautiful island of Con Dao in Vietnam. Visit it in the next few years before tourism catches up with the place!
Travel the Silk Road
To experience some of the adventure and history that Asia has to offer, why not journey along the fascinating Silk Road?
Travellers can choose between the modern northern route and the more remote southern route. For those feeling brave, the southern journey brings ancient abandoned cities and ventures deep into the Uighur heartland.
Cheap Flights to Asia
Thinking that it might be expensive to fly to Asia? Don't be! A number of airlines are offering budget flights to Asia from Europe. I recently took a Scoot flight from Athens to Singapore for less than 170 Euro! I've a guide here on finding cheap flights.
