The evolution of smartwatches over the last few years means they are a powerful travel accessory. Is it time you added a smartwatch to your travel gear?
Choosing Travel Gear
I'm all for items of travel gear that make life easier out on the road. Whether it is something as simple as an inexpensive but incredibly useful travel towel, or a water filter that cuts down on the amount of plastic bottles used when travelling, I love travel gear that is useful rather than trendy.
I've also seen things change quite a bit over the years when it comes to travel. I even wrote about it in this blog post: How travel has changed in 20 years.
So then, the question is – Is a smartwatch a good travel accessory?
Smartwatch for travel
Smartwatches have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. Not only has battery life improved (a real sticking point in the early days), but so has their functionality.
Now, they are able to act as a full visual and interactive aid that is easy to access while the mobile phone stays tucked away. This makes smartwatches a useful travel accessory. Instead of having to rummage through pockets and bags for booking confirmations and flight updates, a couple of quick taps on the smartwatch will bring up the information straight away.
What can a Smartwatch do?
It was only when I came across this infographic (credit: https://marketplace.probrand.co.uk/) that I realised just how useful they have become. They've literally become a legitimate extension of the smartphone. Taking a look through though, I think they left out perhaps THE most important use of a smartwatch when it comes to travel.
There are some countries in the world where you just don't want to be standing in the middle of the street holding your smartphone. Whilst you are looking at Google maps to see where you are, somebody might be planning to snatch the phone away from your hands.
A smartwatch offers a safer way to enjoy the functionality of a smartphone, but makes you less of a target at the same time. Perhaps it's time to add one to your travel gear?
