Small, walkable, unassuming, breezy, mellow - and I...
Small, walkable, unassuming, breezy, mellow - and I sincerely hope it stays that way.
A lovely Aegean sky, starry nights, several trails (some more rewarding than others); simple architecture, delicious Greek dishes (many made with local produce, but at Athens prices); a sweet sandy beach with tamarisks, easily reached on foot (there are other beaches, but most are accessible only by boat); mostly respectful, friendly locals; low-key tourists - except for some (not all!) of the day-trippers and yachters, who are under the misconception that they own the beach and harbour, occasionally blasting their music from their boats.
- The two mini markets are hugely expensive and only one was open in late September. If you're sojourning in Athens or one of the larger islands, do your pocket a favour and stock up on groceries there.
- There are next to no recycling bins and, sadly, there is visible evidence of fly-tipping, though not as bad as in other places I've been to. It's in the locals' interest to prove that they care about the environment, as most of this lovely island's loyal lovers do.
- Last but not least: the local authorities ought to bar speedboats and anything with an engine and propeller from accessing - illegally, of course - Livadi beach: they bring zero income to the inhabitants and drive away the type of visitor who respects the island and its people and wildlife.
On one day, I counted six vessels anchored less than 30 yards from the strand; this is dangerous for swimmers, unsightly and disrespectful to those who want to just gaze at the sea. I challenged the 'captain' of the boat nearest to the beach and met, inevitably, with rudeness. By the way, I wasn't the only one who was angry at this invasion; other swimmers shared this view and felt strongly about it.

I knew that Iraklia was a quiet island ..
I knew that Iraklia was a quiet island ..I have travelled in Greece for 50 years .It was still an adventure travelling 8 hours on the Blue Star ferry .I could have made it easier with a stopover in Naxos .
The island was great for walking ,swimming ,sketching and meditation, The islanders were friendly and helpful …only 2 shops ,no petrol station ,one taxi ( no bus May/ early June ).
I ate most nights at Akathi restaurant which was near Angelos Rooms ( my wonderful accommodation), the food here was really well cooked and presented and Demitrios & Paris and their team of cooks were great hosts and determined to look after their customers.
There are about 9 signed hiking paths and you can buy a small hiking map from Melissa shop .
If you are on an island hopping trip you can link Iraklia with Skinoussa , Koufanisi, Amorgos ,Denoussa + Paros / Naxos …but personally I wouldn’t rush the visit —I felt that I felt healthier and calmer each extra day on Iraklia.
The staff was very friendly and generally keen to help. The owner picked us up from the port free of charge and was eager to give us advice and tips.
The exterior part - common spaces of the hotel were nicely decorated (the water with the pond though attracted many insects in close proximity to the breakfast area). The views to the see were truly fascinating!
The room was spacious and it seemed freshly renovated except for the bathroom.
The breakfast was tasty and the staff were extremely thoughtful of my dietary preferences (vegetarian).
Alexandra collected me from the port, she was wonderful and a perfect host. Although my room was at the rear of the building by the road, it was very quiet. The room was very modern and the facilities excellent. The location is great as it is between the port and the beach and the rooms to the front of the hotel have sea views in an elevated position. There is a wine bar onsite with a great patio area to sit in. The staff were so helpful and I want to thank them for such a fantastic stay. Iraklia is one of my favourite greek islands now.
The room was clean and comfortable. The view from the balcony was absolutely amazing! If you wake up early you can see a beautiful sunrise. For the rest of the day, you can chill at the balcony and have the view, personally I enjoyed it a lot spending time there. The location is nice as it is between the beach Livadi and the port. Dimitris was really friendly. Also, he picked us up from the port when we arrived and drove us to the port on the day of our departure. Iraklia is really relaxing and we felt that at our stay as well.
Outstanding views, quiet, great facilities, clean, friendly hosts.
Situated halfway between the village and the beach of Livadi - everything is within reach.
Watching the sunrise from the balcony is an experience in itself. 😊 Watching the sunset from the old windmill is 4 minutes away.
If you are looking for the best Lesser Cyclades island experience, you cannot go wrong with Villa Panorama in Iraklia.
Room was beautiful and modern with a Greek look. Owners were super friendly and even picked me up from the Port. On the day I was leaving, check out was at 11am while my ferry time was at 9pm. They placed my luggage in a secure room and drove it to the port for me at 8:30pm while I explored more of the island up until leaving so that I did not have to lug it around everywhere.
I was picked up and dropped at the port to catch my ferry. My host gave me a choice between two apartments without extra charge. From my apartment in town I could see both the port and the mountains and hear the local women singing in a nearby taverna - absolutely wonderful! A lot of the tavernas and breakfast cafes were already open by the end of April.
Nikos picked me up from the port and made sure I had everything for a nice stay! I only booked 3 nights but ending up staying for almost a week. The breakfast is super nice and all fresh :) iraklia is a lovely island and all the people are super welcoming. I would recommend this and would definitely go back next time!!
We could not have been better looked after by Alexandra and Markella. After a swim from the delightful beach by the port, a highlight was sitting on their terrace in the evening overlooking Iraklia and enjoying a drink. Everything was peaceful. We'll be back, no doubt.
Wonderful place. The owner was very friendly and collected us from the port, He prepared breakfast especially for us upon arrival. He also drove us to a path in the island and all free of charge. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. The sunrise is exceptional.
There are some familiar tavernas close around for a local dinner, even since it seems isolated in the middle of an unspoiled island. Familiar welcoming, comfortable rusticity, simplicity, and harmony.
Really nice place, new rooms that are very stylish and with great views of the sea and surrounding islands, just a few minutes from the port and a short walk to the best beach on the island.
View, modern decor, owners great very helpful lifts to and from port. Great little island, short walk into town although bear in mind it’s uphill on the way back which may not suit everyone.
Elevated position with fine views. Good sized balcony with table and chairs. Room size was good and well presented on arrival. Situated in a quiet area, though nowhere is noisy on Iraklia!
Great breakfast that changes daily
5 shuttles per day on fixed hours to the port
Pick up from and drop off at the port
Comfortable mattress
Stunning views of the island
