I was recently nominated for the Liebster Award by travel bloggers Prue and Becky of straightondetour.com. (You should definitely check their travel blog out as soon as you have read this article!) The Liebster award is basically a way of bloggers recognising fellow bloggers for their efforts. Nominations are made, and when accepted, you answer some questions, before nominating some other bloggers. Basically, it is like a very big chain letter! So, without further ado…
Liebster Award Questions
Q1 “What’s the worst thing you have ever eaten whilst travelling?”
A1 – I've had a go at eating most things as I've travelled. Guinea pig, crocodile, stinky fruit, insects. The worst thing though, is a bad interpretation of a full English breakfast! My hopes are raised whenever I see it advertised in places like Zambia and Peru. Those hopes are soon dashed though. In my opinion, it's an unforgivable crime!
Q2 “Lakes, mountains, oceans, deserts, arctic, cities, beaches – do you have a one true love when you travel?”
A2 – I am a mountain person. The feeling of cycling uphill to reach the top of a mountain, and then enjoying the well earned view is hard to describe. Deserts come a close second.
Q3 “What was your first ever trip overseas and how did it affect you?”
A3 – I am fortunate that when I was younger, my parents took us abroad for a holiday once a year. One of the most memorable, was visiting the Soviet Union before the wall came down and Communism ended. Years later I realised that travel is not just about seeing things – its about experiencing them and also being a part of history.
Q4 “What is one destination you felt was overrated?”
A4 – I've never been anywhere that I considered over rated. Perhaps it's because I generally travel off the beaten path. I have always found something fun, quirky, and interesting even in the most touristic places.
Q5 “If you won $10,000 would you prefer to travel for months or blow it all on one mythic trip eg: cruise to Antarctica?”
A5 – In the past I would have answered that I would use it to travel longer term… In fact I could travel by bike for 2 years quite easily on 10000. Now though, I would consider the Antarctica trip, or another difficult to reach, once in a lifetime destination.<
Q6 “What’s your biggest home comfort in your backpack?”
A6 – Nowadays, its a small camping travel pillow. After years of sleeping in tents using rolled up clothes as a pillow I decided to wimp out
Q7 – “How much time per week is consumed by blogging?”
A7 – I would say between 10 and 15 hours. Blogging covers so much now especially all the social media.
Q8 “What’s your weirdest, most unusual cultural experience?”
A8 – I've had a few. The most memorable was being invited into the tents of some nomads in Syria out near Palmyra… An interesting evening of sign language and incredible hospitality. I hate to see what has become of Syria now.
Q9 “Plane, bus, bike, car, train, boat – what’s your preferred method of transport?”
A9 – Bicycle!
Q10 “What food, if any, do you miss most from home?”
A10 – Ahh. I have a long list! Fish and chips, pukka pies, brown sauce, full English breakfasts,…..
Q11 “What are you doing today?”
A11 – Living the dream!!
