Cycling from Northampton to Harwich
Although my next cycling trip is still over a year away (possibly two or even three years!), it doesn't hurt to plan ahead a little. To this end, I have been thinking of the route that I would like to take through the UK and where to cross over to mainland Europe. When I cycled from England to South Africa, I cycled into London and then south to cross over from Dover to Calais. Looking at the map now though, I think I would like to cross over from Harwich to the Hook of Holland.
So, this is the proposed route that I will take, with a map shown at the end. Please note – The map shows only the major roads, although I will take minor roads which will be quieter and with less traffic.
Day 1 – Cycle from Northampton to somewhere near Grafham Waters. I found a campsite there which would be suitable –
Agden Hill Farm
Its only 30 miles, and should be a nice, gentle introduction into what should be the start of a four or five year bicycle expedition around the world.
Day 2 – Cycle from Grafham Waters to just south of Cambridge. Another short day of just 30 miles, ending at a campsite whose details are shown below.
Day 3 – Cycling from just south of Cambridge to near Long Melford. Again, the same sort of 30 mile distance, and ending up at a campsite with details shown below.
Cavendish Lane, Glemsford, Sudbury,
Suffolk, CO10 7PZ
Day 4 – Cycling from near Long Melford to Harwich. A slightly longer day at 40 miles, and ending up in Harwich. I stumbled across this place that looked ideal for staying at before the crossing.
Farm Cottage B and B Harwich
Day 5 – this would be the crossing over to the Hook of Holland.
As mentioned, this is just a rough proposed route which is liable to a great deal of change!
