It only takes a few weeks of bad weather at the beginning of winter, to realise that the summer sun is a long, long way off! A winter sun escape is the perfect cure!
Where to Get Some Winter Sun
As regular readers may know, I currently live in Greece. You might expect this to be a perfect winter sun escape destination, but it isn't quite the case. The weather can be quite chilly at times in winter, and not really to be relied upon.
Although I recently enjoyed a 2 days in Santorini, and we were incredibly lucky with the weather, especially when walking from Fira to Oia, the Greek islands are not in general geared up towards winter sun tourism. Red Beach Santorini still looked very nice though! That said, the winter is not a terrible time to visit Santorini, especially when compared to July or August when it's crazy busy! Take a look here for more info on the best time to visit Santorini. You can also check out these day trips from Santorini for more ideas.
Where is better though? My choice for a winter sun escape destination instead goes to the Canary Islands, and in particular, Fuerteventura.
Fuerteventura in the Winter
Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands, and is a 4 hour flight away from the UK. What it lacks in points of architectural and archaeological interest, it more than makes up for with great sandy beaches, and warm weather. Even in December, the day time temperatures in Fuerteventura can reach 21 degrees, and rarely drop below 18 degrees. Sounds perfect, when compared to the strong winds, rain, and snow which hit Europe at the same time of year!
In my opinion, Fuerteventura makes an ideal winter sun escape destination for a week, or even two week vacation. It is of course well known for its wonderful sandy beaches, and you can either soak up the sun, or enjoy all manner of watersports. In fact, Furteventura is one of the best places in Europe to go surfing. It is also family friendly destination.
Away from the beaches, there is plenty more to see and do. One highly recommended activity, is to take a 4WD tour through the desert areas, to visit volcanic craters and picturesque villages. Another suggestion, is to pay a visit the Salt Museum and Salinas del Carmen, which is nearby to Caleta de Fuste.
For me though, Fuerteventura is the perfect winter sun escape destination because I can relax on the beach, enjoy the sun, and get away from it all. What is you favourite place to take a vacation during the winter? Please leave a comment below.
