Iraklia Accommodation

It's easy to find accommodation on the big name Greek islands like Mykonos and Santorini, but what about those little gems like Iraklia

This tiny island is a place where you can go to truly get away from it all, but it also means that it can be difficult to find information about accommodation.

Fortunately, our guide on where to stay in Iraklia can help! We've put together a list of the best Iraklia hotels and guesthouses for you to choose from. Some, you can book online, whilst others you'll need to get in touch with the owners.

First though, a bit of background information on Iraklia island to set the scene…

Iraklia Island, Greece

Iraklia is a small island which belongs to a subgroup of the Cyclades called “the Small Cyclades”. This group of islands also includes Koufonissi, Schinoussa and Donoussa. They are known for the pristine beaches, the crystal clear water and the laid-back atmosphere.

The Iraklia island ferry

You can get to Iraklia by ferry directly from Piraeus port outside of Athens, or from the nearby islands. Take a look at Ferryhopper for available boats and to easily book tickets online. I've a full guide here: How to get from Athens to Iraklia.

Even though Iraklia is small, it’s quite hilly, unlike nearby Schinoussa, with the highest point about 420 metres. There is a total of about 16 kms of paths, which are reasonably well signposted, so it’s really a hiker’s paradise.

The amazing St John cave, the largest cave in the Cyclades, can be found here. You might need some local advice as the entrance is pretty hard to find!

When to go to Iraklia

The population of Iraklia is very small – estimates are between 80 and 150 people. Still, there are quite a few rooms and small hotels in Iraklia.

Most of them only operate in summer – so if you are looking to book a room for the off-season, it might be tricky. The hotel owners might not be there themselves in the winter, often returning to Athens for a few months.

Like most of the smaller islands, Iraklia has a very short high season, which is really July and August. If you are going to Iraklia then, it’s best to book in advance.

And if you happen to be there on 28-29 August, you definitely need to book several weeks before you arrive. These are the days that St John is celebrated, and hundreds of people come to Iraklia for the events.

Where to stay in Iraklia

Most of the hotels in Iraklia are located in the port town of Agios Georgios, which has a lovely little beach. This is where you can find most of the tavernas of the island, as well as a small minimarket.

Agios Georgios is a 20-minute walk from possibly the best beach in Iraklia, Livadi. There are a few rooms and hotels that are equal distance from Agios Georgios and Livadi. Additionally, there is a small choice of rooms close to Livadi beach itself.

Iraklia has one more settlement up on the mountain, called Panagia. There are no places to stay there, but you can find a taverna and a small mini market.

A beach on Iraklia island in Greece

As distances are so small, it doesn’t really matter where you stay. We stayed in Sohoro Rooms in the village, but ended up walking to Livadi beach on most days. Livadi is ideal if you want peace and quiet – not that Agios Georgios is exactly busy!

Booking Iraklia accommodation

In general, search engines like booking.com work or tripadvisor work fine for Iraklia. However, you may come across a couple of issues.

Quite often, the hotel where you want to stay may show as unavailable or fully booked. It’s possible this is the case, but it’s more likely that the hotel owners haven’t listed their availability for the following summer. This is more the case if you are trying to book a hotel in Iraklia early in the year.

Looking at google maps might also help, though the location of some hotels isn’t accurate. This hardly matters, as most hotel owners will offer a pick up from the port. However, if you are booking a room in Iraklia, double check that it is not on another nearby island instead – seriously, we've seen people do this!

In addition to these issues, some of the properties seem to be listed under several different names. We have included all the names where we found more than one.

If the search engines don’t help, you can always use booking forms on the hotel websites, or just send an e-mail. Most hotel owners would speak English (and perhaps another language or two) to some degree.
