Cycling from Big Creek to Watson Lake in Canada

The cycling journey across Canada continued with the day's ride between Big Creek and Watson Lake. Here, I checked out the world famous signpost forest!

Cycling out of Big Creek Campground

(Blog post written: Aug 21 2009)

It rained all night, and showed no signs of stopping in the morning. I went into the campground kitchen, and there was already a guy in there who kindly offered to cook me a pancake.

I had nothing else to share with him but porridge and my incredible hot chocolate with added farting ingredients, and so we had breakfast and a chat.

With a general lack of food, and the knowledge that I really need to start pushing some mileage, I packed up and made ready to go. The guy (who's name I either forgot to ask or forgot whenever he mentioned it, sorry mate) gave me a beer before he also left… Cheers!

Then, it was time to hit the road and continue cycling in the Yukon of Canada.

Watson Lake

I reached Watson Lake within four hours, and the rain was relentless for the entire journey, with mist and clouds all around. The sun was nowhere to be seen.

I went through a stage of weakness where I considered booking into a motel, but toughened up again when I saw the prices, and headed for the 10 dollars a night campground instead.

My tent was surprisingly dry when I set it up, which was a bonus, but the rain just didn't stop.

I cycled back into the main section of town, and stocked up with food before paying a visit to the ‘World Famous Signpost Forest'. I think it may be world famous in only Canada though, if you know what I mean.

Apparently, the first signpost was nailed up during the war by a homesick G.I., and its grown through the years until now, they boast over 66,000 signposts. It really doesn't get any more cutting edge than this, does it?
